Welcome James Zull
James Zull is Professor of Biology at Case Western Reserve University where he is also Director Emeritus of the highly regarded University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education. With a B.A. in Chemistry from Houghton College in New York and M.S. and Ph.D degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Dr. Zull has taught Chemistry, Biology, and Biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University for many years. Dr. Zull is the recipient of many grants and has supervised numerous graduate students during his career.
It is Dr. Zull's work as the first Director of the University Center for Innovation in Teacher and Education founded in 1994 at Case Western Reserve University that is of most interest to OAIS teachers. Dr. Zull has more than 105 publications, most of them peer reviewed, in Biochemistry to his name. His 2002 book, The Art of Changing the Brain, provides an authoritative overview of how the brain works in terms that are quite comprehensible to classroom teachers. The book also draws on his college teaching experience and his work with colleagues on pedagogy to provide illustrations and anecdotes from teaching that are easily recognizable to the independent school teacher of upper level high school student. Dr. Zulls book is both highly accessible and well grounded in neuroscience.
